The legal team representing Khalifa Haftar, who is being sued in US courts for alleged war crimes, has withdrawn from one of the cases brought against him by Libyan families, the Libyan American Alliance group has confirmed.

According to the bloc, Khalifa Haftar's defence team sent a letter to Judge Leonie Brinkema requesting their exemption from representing Haftar on the grounds that he was not communicating or cooperating with them and for evading paying lawyers’ fees.

They said that continuing to represent Haftar at this stage would impose an unreasonable financial burden on the defence counsel.

"The defendant did not financially fulfill his obligations towards the defence attorney and did not communicate or cooperate with his attorney team during the trial."

The warlord Khalifa Haftar who still holds US citizenship, faces several cases in the Virginia court, including alleged war crimes in his home country Libya.
