The US Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Greenfield, has reiterated that Washington will remain committed to working through the UN Security Council to ensure that the Libyan elections progress as scheduled.

Speaking at a press conference from the UN's HQ in New York, Greenfield clarified that she is actively engaged in consultations to issue a decision by the UN Security Council in this regard.

She confirmed her country's pledge to work with the rest of the Council members to ensure that Libyans will be going to the polls on December 24, noting that they had obtained an extension of the mandate of the UN mission in Libya for a period of two weeks.

Last Wednesday, the Security Council unanimously approved extending the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), for two weeks, as a technical rollover, in light of Russian and Chinese efforts to make amendments to its mandate.
