The Italian Foreign Minister, Paolo Gentiloni, has stated that his visit to Tripoli Tuesday manifests Italy’s support for the UNSMIL-proposed government on so many levels.

In a joint press conference by Gentiloni and the Deputy President of the UN-proposed Presidential Council, Ahmad Mitig in Tripoli on Tuesday, Gentiloni said that they both agreed on holding an international meeting in Rome in the coming days in order to provide the necessary support for the government.

He added that Italy will cooperate with Libya to lay the basis for fighting illegal immigration, pointing out that this cooperation between the two countries’ institutions is going to clearly unfold over the next coming days.

On the other hand, PC Deputy, Mitig, said that the Libyan-Italian conventions will be reactivated and Italy will help make travel procedures easy for Libyans to enter European Union Countries by reopening its airspace for Libyan airliners, in addition to reactivating some other economic conventions.

In addition, Gentiloni also talked on the phone with the elected Head of the State Council, Abdelrahman Al-Sweihli, telling him that Italy welcomes the formation of the council as it is a vital step toward implementing the Skhirat agreement, applauding Al-Sweihli’s role in the success of the Skhirat agreement.

The Presidency Council was imposed by the UN Support Mission in Libya as per Skhirat agreement which was signed by selected members from both rival parliaments who do not have official authorization to sign the agreement.
