The former Libyan oil minister Abdelbari Al-Arusi was released Tuesday by an unknown armed group two weeks after he had been kidnapped from outside his house in Tripoli.

Al-Arusi was reportedly seen returning to his house without further details about the kidnappers or their demands.

The kidnappers' identity has not been revealed yet neither by the family or authorities in Tripoli since he was abducted on July 25.

Al-Arusi, 58, is a member of the Islamist Justice and Construction Party (JCP). He was a political prisoner and sentenced to death under the regime of Muammar Gaddafi.

After ousting Libya’s long-time dictator, he served as minister of oil and gas from 2012 to 2014.

He was then accused by tribal groups and Cyrenaica separatist politicians of selling oil illicitly for the benefit of Muslim Brotherhood.

The groups, without proving their allegations, shut down oil production in August 2013 causing Libya over 100 billion dollars in losses , according to National Oil Corporation.
