The Embassies of France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States in Libya have urged the Libyan parties to stick to their commitment to hold parliamentary and presidential elections on 24 December.

In a joint statement issued Sunday, the five embassies expressed their support to the UN envoy Jan Kubis's call in urging all Libyan actors to ensure the holding of inclusive and free presidential and parliamentary elections next December.

"Such elections, as determined in the Roadmap of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) in Tunis in November 2020, and asserted in UNSC Resolution 2570, are an essential step in further stabilizing and uniting Libya, and their results should be respected by all."

The embassies said that the House of Representatives approved steps to achieve this goal. "Rules for the presidential election were made public by the Speaker on 8 September 2021, and progress has been made by HNEC on the preparations for holding the national presidential and parliamentary elections".

They considered such developments significant steps towards holding the elections on schedule.

The embassies also noted with concern that the laws regulating elections are past due, demanding Libyan politicians to recognize that time has come to launch and complete the electoral framework, taking into account all legitimate concerns of the Libyan people, in order to allow for the elections to take place on time.
