A family has lost five children after they suffocated due to inhaling insecticide, Tripoli University Hospital has confirmed.

The children of the Gouma family residing in the Hashan neighbourhood in Tripoli arrived at the hospital in critical condition.

"A seven-month-old baby girl was dead when she arrived at the hospital on Thursday night, while three other siblings died at dawn on Friday, and their fifth brother was lost hours later," the hospital said.

It stressed that doctors at the hospital and all the staff are working to save the lives of three other siblings admitted to pediatric care, noting that the extent of the poisoning was very large, and the cases arrived at the hospital in a complete coma.

The hospital urged parents to be careful when using pesticides as it contains toxic and deadly substances.

Four of the victims were buried on Friday and the fifth sibling is due to be buried on Saturday, the Ambulance and Emergency Service said.
