The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell has expressed the EU's support for the ceasefire agreement announced by the Prime Minister of the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez al-Sarraj and head of the Tobruk-based House of Representatives (HoR), Aguila Saleh, which included consensus on common principles for solving the conflict.

In a statement issued on behalf of the EU on Saturday, Borell described the agreement as a "constructive step", commending the Libyan leaders for the determination they showed to overcome the current stalemate, according to the statement.

"We fully support the agreement around the principles to immediately cease all military activities across Libya, requiring the departure of all foreign fighters and mercenaries present in Libya, and resume the negotiating process in the framework of the UN-led Berlin process," said the EU top diplomat.

Borrell urged all parties in Libya, to translate these principles into concrete actions on the ground, stressing the EU will continue to support efforts to establish a sovereign, united, and stable country that would enhance prosperity in Libya.
