A joint statement by the High Representative of the European Union Josep Borrell, and Italian, German and French Foreign Ministers has called for a humanitarian truce in Libya in Ramadan.

The joint statement indicated on Saturday that the signatories want to unite their voices to those of the UN Secretary-General Guterres and his Acting Special Representative for Libya, Stephanie Williams, in their call for a humanitarian truce in Libya.

It added that the conflict continued in Libya unabated and developments during the latest weeks had increased concerns, in particular over the situation among the long suffering Libyan population.

The statement also called on all the Libyan actors to get inspired by the spirit of the Holy Ramadan, engage in resuming talks for a genuine ceasefire on the basis of the draft agreement of the Military Committee of 23 February.

It urged Libyan parties as well to look for a political solution to the conflict, and unite their efforts to face the common enemy which the current Coronavirus pandemic risks represent in the interest of the whole country.

The spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Stephane Dujarric, warned last Thursday that a cessation of hostilities is urgently required in Libya as ongoing insecurity and fighting around Tripoli are continuing to deepen civilian suffering.

"Half of the assessed cities reported food shortages and 86 percent reported food price hikes. On average, a recent assessment showed the prices of food items increased by 27 percent, while those of hygiene items have gone up by 12 percent." Dujarric explained.

He added that the UN, along with its humanitarian partners, is supporting Libyan authorities and working on the frontlines to provide aid to internally displaced people, returnees, refugees and asylum seekers.
