The High Representative of the European Union, Joseph Borrell, has expressed willingness to visit Libya on January 07 2020 to meet with the Head of the Libyan Presidential Council and a number of Libyan officials.

Speaking on the phone with the Libyan Foreign Minister at the Government of National Accord, Mohammed Sayala, Borrell said he will be visiting Libya along with foreign ministers of Germany, France, Italy and Britain.

According to the Foreign Ministry’s statement, Borrell also discussed with Sayala on Friday the developments of Khalifa Haftar’s offensive on Tripoli and his forces’ attacks on civilians in the capital as well as other areas in the western region.

Meanwhile, Brussels is going to host a meeting on Monday in the presence of foreign ministry officials from Italy, France, UK, and Germany to discuss the situation in Libya and to pave the way for the EU delegation's visit to Tripoli before Berlin conference, which is slated for the second half of January, Italian news agency, Aki, reported.

Meanwhile, a source from the Libyan Foreign Ministry, who asked not to be identified, told The Libya Observer that the EU visit will be on January 06-07 before the Turkish Parliament votes on the deployment motion as per a request by the Presidential Council's government.

The source added that the Europeans are planning to pressure Al-Sarraj to withdraw the request for military support from Turkey before the Parliament passes the bill, which could be on January 08-09 as announced earlier by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
