The High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, has reiterated the EU's support for the Libyan Government of National Unity to achieve its goals, unify state institutions and hold elections next December.

In a joint press conference with the Libyan Foreign Minister Najla Al-Mangoush in Tripoli on Wednesday, Borrell said the EU is delighted to see Libya achieving progress and reminded that December elections are approaching, adding that the EU is happy to support Libyan institutions, increase cooperation; especially in the Mediterranean as it plays a pivotal role in monitoring weapons flow and smuggling operations.

Meanwhile, Al-Mangoush said they had agreed that the EU would support stability in Libya, elections and border security whether by training Libyan cadres or by providing technical assistance, in addition to agreeing on the need for a deeper role for the EU in Libya as it "has a positive impact on Libya".

Borrell is visiting Libya to meet also with the Head of the Presidential Council, Mohammed Menfi, and other officials.
