The European Union Delegation in Libya has issued a statement in agreement with the EU Heads of Mission to Libya condemning "the murder of thirty trafficked immigrants, mostly Bangladeshi nationals, on 27 May in Mizda which also resulted in others wounded."

The EU's statement also welcomed instructions by the Libyan authorities to open an investigation into this appalling crime and said they expect the perpetrators to be brought to justice.

The statement also said that the EU remains committed to continuing its support to the authorities in strengthening their rule of law capacities so to allow them to counter criminal networks such as the one responsible for this crime and to maximize EU's assistance to Libyan communities impacted by the trafficking and smuggling of immigrants.

Meanwhile, Libyan Interior Ministry is investigating, through Mizda town's security department, the murder of a Libyan national and 30 illegal immigrants in the town.

In a statement on Thursday, the Interior Ministry said a Libyan national in Mizda, accused of human trafficking, was killed by illegal immigrants while he was smuggling them to coastal cities.

The Ministry added that the relatives of the Libyan national took the law to their own hands and committed vendetta crimes by murdering 26 people from Bangladesh and four from African countries, in addition to injuring 11 others.

The Interior Ministry instructed Mizda security department to take the necessary legal action to arrest the perpetrators and bring them to justice, saying whatever the motive behind the mass murder crime was, the law doesn't permit people to take matters into their own hands.

In the meantime, the EU also express concern about the increase of civilian casualties in Libya over the past weeks as the ongoing conflict continues to take a heavy toll on the most vulnerable, especially the internally displaced Libyans as well as migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers.

The EU statement said "Libya needs a peaceful political resolution to the ongoing conflict to end the suffering and loss of lives."
