The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) said it joins the 5+5 Joint Military Commission (JMC) in condemning the "act of hatred" that took place on the coastal road few days ago, following its opening on 30 July 2021.
UNSMIL added in a statement that the long-awaited opening of the coastal road is not only vital for reconnecting Libya and ordinary Libyans, allowing humanitarian access and the flow of commerce, but also for the peace and unity of Libya in general.
"Thoughtless acts like this jeopardize the implementation of the Ceasefire Agreement of October 2020, the reunification of the country, and social cohesion. The Mission echoes the JMC’s call for relevant Libyan authorities to take immediate action and hold perpetrators accountable for such acts." UNSMIL indicated.
The Libyan 5+5 Joint Military Commission condemned last Tuesday "hostile acts" that aim to undermine the unity of the country and its stability on the coastal road between east and west Libya, adding in a statement that the chaos on the coastal road was a hate act that was done by spoilers who aimed to destabilize Libya, condemning all kinds of unrest and division on the coastal road or any other area in the country.
Some fans of a sports club put photos of Khalifa Haftar on the road so cars can pass over them before removing them after the match of last Sunday ended.
Observers saw the reaction of the 5+5 JMC toward the incident that involved Haftar as "double standards" in comparison to its delayed reactions toward similar incidents of figures from western region or from other countries happening in eastern Libya, especially the recent incidents on last Tuesday in the east with people insulting western region figures including a fighter against Italian occupation, Ramadan Al-Suwaihli.
