Easterners in Derna city celebrated on Friday the first anniversary of defeating IS militants and liberating their city.

The celebration took place at the Sahaba square in the presence of Derna security department and security forces of Derna Shura Council, who were securing the event and the locals at the celebration for fear any violation of the security takes place.

Over 2000 gifts were given to children amid a number of entertainment activities that were held at the celebration event, besides paying homage to a number of service institutions and the foreign medical team that were in the city giving a helping hand to the fighters during the fight against terror.

After months of neck-to-neck fight with IS diehards in Derna, the city's Shura Council fighters managed to uproot the terrorists in April 2016.

About 250 or more Derna Shura Council fighters and city's locals were killed in the war that saw IS vanquished from the city.
