Several Derna residents have objected to the appointment of Brigadier General, Hamad Al-Shalwi, as a mayor to the city, saying that there is an elected civilian municipal council in the city.

The residents confirmed that they totally oppose all of the orders given by the so-called Military Governor of the eastern region, Abdelraziq Al-Nathori, especially the decision to appoint Al-Shalwi in Derna.

“All of the measures following the appointment are invalid, especially the decision to freeze Derna Municipality’s bank accounts.” The residents explained, rejecting decisions that can damage the country’s security and sovereignty.

They pointed out that support must be directed at the elected municipal council, urging all official authorities to cooperate with it in its work in the city.

The Chief of Staff of Khalifa Haftar’s Army, Al-Nathori, who was appointed by the Speaker of the HoR as a military governor in the east, had issued many dubious orders to dismiss elected mayors and replaced them with military men, and Derna is a case in point.
