Libyan Coast Guard in the western region thwarted earlier Saturday an oil tanker with the flag of Sierra Leone while it was sailing in the Libyan waters full of Libyan oil loads heading to Malta.

The tanker’s crew consists of nine persons of different nationalities, namely: Turkish, Ukrainian, and Azerbaijani, who were venturing to smuggle about 1 million liters of Libyan oil, a source from the Coast Guard told media outlets.

“The tanker was taken to the navy base in Tripoli, and then an investigation into the incident will take place to collect any shreds of evidence to send the case to the Public Prosecution Office.” Added the source.

The Coast Guard, in western Libya, had previously intercepted a tanker with the Russian flag as it was attempting to break away with a load of oil off Zuwara coasts last December.
