A child was killed and several others injured Tuesday night when a shell landed in a square in the Mansheya area of Sabha south of Libya, targeting a group of people celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Libyan revolution.

Director of Sabha Medical Center, Abdul Rahman Arish confirmed that the centre received last night 15 injured people as a result of the incident, indicating that some cases are in critical condition and may require surgery.

A spokesman for the Municipal Council of Sabha, Osama al-Wafi described the incident as "a horrific crime" confirming that the source of the shell remains unknown but investigations are underway to ascertain the perpetrators.

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Human Rights in Libya (NCHRL) has condemned the attack with the strongest terms and called on the Attorney General's office and the Interior Ministry to open an urgent, transparent, and comprehensive investigation into this "blatant abuse and heinous crime".

"NCHRL strongly condemns and denounces the attack which killed the child "Abd al-Rahman al-Abed," who was just ten years old, in addition to the injury of other people, including two children in critical condition."

The commission reiterated its rejection of the continuing crimes and "heinous violations" against children and childhood across Libya, as a result of armed conflicts and security tensions.

"Children are not a target, and they must be protected at all times, wherever they are. All sides must refrain from attacks on civilian infrastructure," the NCHRL added.
