The Chairman of the Presidential Council (PC) held a meeting in Tunis Thursday with General Thomas Waldhauser, Commander of the American Military Command in Africa (AFRICOM) and Ambassador Donald Blum, Charge d'Affaires of the United States Embassy in Libya.

The two sides discussed the latest political and security developments in the Libyan arena, notably the recent events in the capital Tripoli, as well as the bilateral relations between the two countries.

The US Ambassador welcomed the cease-fire in Tripoli and called on all parties to abide by the truce, reaffirming the US commitment to support the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) in this framework and in facing terrorism, most recently the terrorist attack on the HQ of the National Oil Corporation (NOC) in the capital.

The ambassador also stressed the US strong support for the democratic process in Libya and for the efforts of the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General to Libya Ghassan Salame and every endeavour that brings security and stability to the country.

The meeting reviewed the joint effort between the two countries in combating ISIS and Al-Qaeda, in which General Waldhauser referred to the importance of strategic cooperation in this aspect and praised the role of the GNA in this respect, pointing out to the efforts of AFRICOM forces in pursuing the remnants of these groups and targeting them, in coordination with the GNA.

For his part, the Head of the PC welcomed the US commitment to support his government and its effective assistance in defeating the terrorist and extremist organizations in the framework of the strategic partnership between the two countries.

AL-Sirraj also said that his government is willing to expand the strategic cooperation between Libya and the United States to include the fields of investment and development.

On the other hand, the American delegation expressed its satisfaction with the latest measures taken and the adoption of the economic reforms, which the PC issued on Wednesday.
