US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday welcomed the vote of confidence by the House of Representatives in support of the new Government of National Unity (GNU) headed by Abdul-Hamid Dbeibah.

Blinken considered the step as a milestone towards fulfilling the UN roadmap for an effective and unified government.

"We encourage this new leadership, upon assuming power, to take the necessary steps to ensure free and fair national elections on December 24 as a key step toward finalizing a political solution to end a decade of conflict," Blinken said in a statement published on the US State Department website.

The top US diplomat called on all parties in Libya to maintain the momentum and to support the full implementation of the Libyan ceasefire agreement, restore full respect for the UN arms embargo, and end foreign interference.

He concluded his statement by emphasizing Washington's support for the Libyan people in their path towards establishing lasting peace and security throughout their country.
