Controversial as it is, the issue of granting Libyan diplomatic passport to the spouse of the Vice-President of the Libyan Arab Foreign Bank, Falak Jmeel Ali Al-Assad, who is the cousin of Syria's President Bashar Al-Assad, has been the talk of the town for the last few days.
Falak Al-Assad's passport was granted by the Foreign Ministry of the Presidential Council government, which led the so-called National Security Committee of the House of Representatives to open an investigation on the involvement of the Foreign Minister Mohammed Sayala in the matter.
It said in an official letter on Wednesday that this is a violation of sovereignty to give the Syrian national and any other foreign national the privilege of Libyan diplomatic passports, demanding withdrawing it from Falak Al-Assad.
Meanwhile, the deputy foreign minister Tariq Shuaib accused last week Sayala of issuing diplomatic passports for foreigners including for the spouse of the Vice-President of the Libyan Arab Foreign Bank, Mohammed Abdeljawad.
"I have renewed Falak's passport. Yes she is the cousin of Bashar Al-Assad and daughter of Hafid Al-Assad's brother. Her passport was issued at the time of Gaddafi's regime and it was renewed by all governments before our government." Sayala responded to criticism in a statement.
However, activists posted a photo of the passport showing that it is a new issue and not a renewed one.
