The Arab League's Secretary General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit and UN acting envoy o Libya Stephanie Williams discussed in Cairo on Sunday the latest developments in Libya, especially the need to reopen oil facilities to resume production and exports.

The Secretary General and the UN envoy agreed on the importance of building on the joint call for the ceasefire declared earlier in the month by the the Government of National Accord and the House of Representatives in eastern Libya, the pan-Arab body said in a statement.

Aboul-Gheit, according to the statement, reiterated the Arab League's position that seeks a comprehensive settlement for the Libyan crisis through resuming negotiations to reach a permanent ceasefire in Libya under UN sponsorship and supervision.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement earlier Sunday that Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry held similar talks with the Acting Head of the UNSMIL on the latest developments in Libya.

Williams also met in Cairo with Director of Egyptian Intelligence, Major General Abbas Kamel as part of UN efforts to revive political process.

The UNSMIL said in a statement that Williams and Kamel discussed the situation in Libya and ways to deescalate and swiftly resume a comprehensive political process under the auspices of the UN.
