The Head of the Presidential Council Fayez Al-Sirraj has called on the United Nations Security Council to lift the sanctions on Libya, saying they have become obstacles to development in the country.

Al-Sirraj made his remarks in a meeting with the Chairman of the UN Security Council’s Sanctions Committee, Olof Skoog, in Tripoli.

“It is very significant that Mr. Skoog has visited Libya to see for himself the status quo.” Al-Sirraj remarked.

The media office of Al-Sirraj said the latter discussed with the committee’s head and delegation the need to lift the sanctions on Libya and the impact of the sanctions on politics, economy and security in the country.

“The UN Security Council should reconsider the effectiveness of the sanctions and how long they will continue to be in place.” Al-Sirraj remarked.

He said that his government did not call for unfreezing the Libyan assets but for allowing it to manage them so it can provide for the Libyan people and push forth the economic reforms.

He also called on the Security Council to partially lift the ban on weapons’ purchase to help the government fight terrorism and illegal immigration, adding that there are some parties who are providing illicit money and arms to the warring sides in Libya, citing the UN Panel of Experts’ report.
