The Italian Foreign Minister, Angelino Alfano, arrived in Tripoli Thursday and met with the Head of the UN-proposed Presidential Council (PC), Fayez Al-Sirraj and other officials including the Libyan foreign Minister, Mohammed Sayala.

According to the media office of the PC, Alfano reiterated his country's support for the PC, while Al-Sirraj told the Italian FM that both Libya and Italy have deep-rooted friendship over the history.

The Italian FM and Al-Sirraj both reviewed the joint efforts in fighting illegal immigration, human trafficking, cooperation in security of Libya's southern borders by training of border guards and by providing high-tech systems, and undermining smuggling fuel via the sea.

Al-Serraj, meanwhile, also thanked Italy for its efforts to broker a solution and bring the conflicting parties in Libya together.

Italy received the commander of the eastern self-styled army in Libya, Khalifa Haftar, on Tuesday, when he met the Italian Defense and Interior Ministers, who told him that the only solution in Libya is political and he should use politics to face his foes, according to Italian media.
