The US military command in Africa, "AFRICOM" on Friday it was looking to activate its Security Force Assistance Brigades, brigades specialized in training and assisting foreign forces, to address joint security concerns with Tunisia.

AFRICOM said, in a statement, that its commander, Stephen Townsend expressed to Tunisian Defence Minister, Imed Hazgui, in a telephone call on Thursday, their readiness to deploy the US Security Force Assistance Brigades in Tunisia, citing concerns about Russian activities in Libya.

According to the statement, both, Tunisian and American officials agreed to cooperate in order to achieve regional security and confront the escalation of violence in Libya, in response to the growing Russian military activities.

"As Russia continues to fan the flames of the Libyan conflict, regional security in North Africa is a heightened concern," AFRICOM said in a statement. "We’re looking at new ways to address mutual security concerns with Tunisia," the statement added.

The United States Africa Command said that Tunisia "recognizes the merits" of American values and professionalism, and values the partnership with the United States, though there's still no word from the Tunisian government on AFRICOM's statement.
