The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki has reiterated the African Union’s readiness to assist in the implementation of the ceasefire and to contribute to create the necessary conditions for the resumption of dialogue between all Libyan stakeholders for a durable solution.

The Chairperson welcomed in a statement the signing of a ceasefire between the parties in Libya following negotiations within the framework of the 5+5 Joint Military Commission in Geneva.

Faki commended the work done by all parties including the United Nations and fellow African countries for their contribution in the mediation efforts that led to this important development.

He further underscored that only a negotiated political solution and national reconciliation can address the numerous challenges facing the Libyan people who deserve a permanent respite from violence and conflict.

In earlier statements, the African Union urged more than once the UN Security Council to appoint a new envoy and Head of mission in Libya, a post that has been vacant since Ghassan Salame left in last March.

The African Union said at the time that an African envoy should be appointed and cast doubt on the seriousness of the international community's efforts in that regard as two African personalities for the post were rejected.
