The Acting Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General to Libya, Stephanie Williams, has said that the UN mission was not aware of the "oil agreement" between Ahmed Maiteeq and Khalifa Haftar.

In statements to the London-based Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, Williams stressed the importance of securing all oil fields and ports, under the supervision of Libya's state oil company, the NOC, and clearing them of fighters and mercenaries, which would allow these sites to operate safely and continuously, as she put it.

"Most of the Libyan parties have become convinced that the settlement to the conflict must be through political means," Williams said, indicating that the military solution or using the resources as leverage did not work but, instead, it had added more suffering to the Libyans.
