The UN Special Adviser on Libya, Stephanie Williams, has condemned the attack on the House of Representatives HQ in Tobruk by a group of protesters.

In a tweet on Saturday, Williams described the storming of the HoR as an act of vandalism, which is "totally unacceptable," as she called for the respect of rights for peaceful protests.

The UN envoy stressed the need to maintain calm and urged the Libyan leadership to deal responsibly with the protests and for everyone to exercise restraint.

On Friday, protesters stormed the Parliament headquarters in Tobruk and demanded the dissolution of the existing political institutions and to go to elections.
