Fire is raging through farms in Zella, the oasis town’s Municipal Council member, Muftah Masoud has revealed.

The fire that broke out Saturday destroyed about 5 hectares of areas planted with palm trees, with residential neighbourhoods near the site of the fire, Masoud explained.

In a press statement, Masoud said that the agricultural police began investigations to find out the cause of the fire, noting that there were heavy losses as a result, including the loss of a large number of palm trees.

Masoud expressed his astonishment at the government's ignorance of their appeals to provide a fire engine despite their repeated calls, pointing out that they put out the fire by primitive methods.

Since the beginning of the summer, the municipality has been exposed to more than 6 fires, he said. The fire brigade needs 3 hours to reach the location of the fires due to the deterioration of roads, he added.
