US ambassador and special envoy to Libya, Richard Norland, has congratulated Stephanie Williams on her appointment as Special Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, reaffirming US support for UN efforts to advance the political process including through national elections to install a permanent unified government.

He also thanked outgoing Special Envoy of the Secretary General, Jan Kubis for his dedicated work in harnessing international support for Libya at this crucial stage in its history, the US embassy tweeted.

Regarding the elections, the US ambassador quoted some words from Kubis farewell message, saying “abstaining from the elections and mobilizing against them, would only put the fate and the future of the country at the mercy of those inside Libya and their external backers […] who prefer the power of the bullet to the power of the ballot.”
