The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has welcomed the efforts undertaken by the Government of National Unity to release 107 detainees held in Zawiya city west of Tripoli.

The detainees were captured on the battlefields while fighting in the ranks of Haftar in his war on Tripoli.

The UNSMIL commended in several tweets on its official website the contribution of the Libya Political Dialogue Forum members, the Zawiya Security Directorate, the tribal elders, and the people of Zawiya to this step, stressing its commitment to continue assisting such efforts upon requests of the GNU.

It expressed hope that this initiative would constitute the beginning of a nationwide, reconciliation and called for the release of all detainees before the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.
