The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has expressed its deep concern for the safety of the head of the National Youth League, Imad Al-Harati, who was reportedly kidnapped by unknown gunmen from his office in Tripoli on September 26.

UNSMIL added in a statement that Al-Harati was kidnapped having called for peaceful demonstrations in support of the holding of elections on the scheduled date of December 24, stressing that the right to freedom of expression is protected under Libyan and international law.

It further called for his immediate and unconditional release and for a prompt and in-depth investigation into his kidnapping.
