The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has congratulated the Libyan people and the country's "leadership" on the 70th anniversary of Libya's independence day.

In a series of tweets on Friday, the UNSMIL commended the progress made towards achieving peace and stability, saying that this year's anniversary comes at a pivotal moment, as the country makes its way towards a peaceful transition through the ballot boxes.

The UNSMIL called on all Libyans to remain focused on this objective, work together to resolve the current divisions, and enhance ongoing preparations for holding national elections that "will lead to unity, stability, and legal institutions."
