The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), demanded the immediate release of the civilian activist Khaled Al-Sakran, who has been detained in Benghazi for approximately a week now, due to his peaceful protest activities.

UNSMIL said that under international law, Al-Sakran has the right to freedom and personal security and should be clearly informed of any official charges against him, adding that he should be afforded the opportunity to defend himself in a court of law.

The Mission expressed its alarm at his continued detention due to peaceful protest. Sources close to Al-Sakran said that he was taken to the Military Intelligence headquarters in Benghazi, however no reason or warrant for the summons or arrest are, as yet known.
