The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has said that all perpetrators of attacks on the Water System should be prosecuted to the fullest extent permitted by law.

UNSMIL added in a statement on Tuesday, that these "unjustified acts" are a form of collective punishment of citizens, stressing that it is an unacceptable matter that should be condemned, especially when it is used for blackmail in order to obtain political gains, according to the statement.

The mission emphasized that any obstruction of vital infrastructure such as the Man-Made Water System constitutes a violation of international human rights law and international humanitarian law.

The statement pointed out that on August 14, armed men closed the Man-Made Water System, which poses a threat to the water security of millions of Libyans and portends a humanitarian crisis.
