The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has expressed its concern over the arrest of Hassan Al-Faghl, the chairperson of the subcommittee of the municipality of Qasr Al-Akhiyar and an employee of the Central Committee for Municipal Council Elections (CCMCE).

The UNSMIL called in a statement on the Public Prosecution to conduct an in-depth and prompt transparent investigation into his detention.

It said that Al-Faghl’s unlawful detention is an obvious violation of Libyan laws and international obligations, which constitutes a threat to the CCMCE’s institutional independence, according to the statement.

It went on to say that the detention of Al-Faghl on May 19 impedes the mandate of the committee to manage, organize and supervise the local election processes throughout the country.
