The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said that it is about to open a transit centre for migrants and refugees in Tripoli with a capacity of 1000 people to facilitate evacuations and resettlement in other countries.

The UNHCR Special Representative to Libya Roberto Mignone clarified that more than 1500 migrants and refugees have been "evacuated" from Libya to Niger this year, while 200 others accepted to resettle in European countries such as France, Switzerland, Sweden and Germany.

"If European countries speed up the resettlement procedures, we might open other similar crossing points in the countries of Chad, Burkina Faso and Sudan," Mignone added.
