The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has expressed shock at reports regarding the drowning of more than 200 migrants off the Libyan coast two days ago.

In a statement, the UNHCR called for urgent international action to boost rescue efforts on average for all stakeholders, including NGO ships and commercial vessels.

It also demanded to provide access to protection and assistance for migrants in countries of asylum and render alternative paths for refugees in Libya trying to cross the sea in search of protection and assistance.
