The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Libya announced the rescue of 6,588 refugees and migrants from the Mediterranean by Libyan Coast Guards, up until August 5.

The Commission said in a statement that amongst the migrants there are 4,321 refugees and asylum seekers registered with the UNHCR, stressing that it continues to support refugees and asylum seekers living in built-up areas in Tripoli.

It also noted that the majority of those registered are in fact of Syrian origin at 34%, followed sharply by Sudanese nationals at 32%. The UNHCR called for an end to detention, demanding the orderly and safe release of all refugees.
