The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said it had evacuated more than 4,400 refugees and asylum seekers from Libya to other countries since 2017.

The UNHCR explained on Facebook that 2,900 migrants were evacuated through the emergency transit mechanism to Niger, while 425 people were evacuated to European countries, through the transit centre in Romania.

It further noted that there are currently, around 4,700 refugees are held in detention centres in difficult conditions, clarifying that it will initially transport 500 migrants to Rwanda, as a first batch, in preparation for resettling them in their countries of origin.
