The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced that a total of 2262 migrants have lost their lives or gone missing while attempting to cross the Mediterranean in 2018.

UNHCR spokeswoman Celine Schmidt said that the Mediterranean remains the most dangerous maritime route for migrants and asylum seekers in the world, although the number of victims has declined in 2018 compared to 2017; which exceeded 3000 migrants, according to AFP.

The Commission also indicated that the number of migrant arrivals in Europe over the past year was just above 100 thousand compared with more than 170 thousand immigrants in 2017.
