The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) disclosed Thursday that around 159 Eritrean asylum seekers have been transferred from refugee shelters in Tripoli to the emergency transit centre in Niamey, Niger, as part of its plan to provide protection to the most vulnerable groups of migrants.

The UNHCR explained that it has followed up the termination of procedures and the issuance of travel documents for migrants, where they were transformed by air from Mitiga Airport in Tripoli, to Niamey, after being hosted at the UNHCR Emergency Transit Centre.

Libya is host to more than 6000 refugees and migrants; 4000 of them are covered by the commission's mandate, UNHCR clarified.
