The United Nations expressed concern Monday on the situation of civilians in the city of Derna amid reports of ongoing fierce clashes inside the city.

In a statement made by the spokesman for the Secretary-General Stéphane Dujarric, the United Nations explained that more than 8,000 people have been displaced this month out of Derna, bringing the total number since mid-May to about 11 thousand people, in addition to 800 other families who fled to other areas within the city.

The statement warned of the rapid increase in humanitarian needs in Derna, with acute shortages of medicines, medical supplies, food, water, fuel and cooking gas, reminding the parties to the conflict of their responsibilities to protect the civilians.

It also called to provide a safe passage for those wishing to leave the city and immediate and unrestricted supplies of humanitarian assistance.
