The UN Security Council has welcomed the approval of Libya's new government headed by Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, calling on all parties in Libya to commit themselves fully to implementing the ceasefire agreement.

In a statement on Friday, the council urged the Member States to respect the full implementation of the agreement — including through the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya — and to fully comply with the United Nations arms embargo.

The statement underscored the importance of the unification of Libya’s institutions, calling on Libyan authorities and actors to ensure a smooth handover of all competencies and duties to the new administration.

It further called on the new government to make necessary preparations for setting Libya for free and fair national presidential and parliamentary elections on 24 December 2021.
