The United Nations Security Council approved on Friday a resolution submitted by Britain to extend the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) for three months, ending in late July.

This decision is the fourth issued by the UN Security Council since mid-September 2021, while council members were unable to settle their differences over the appointment of a new special envoy to the UN mission, as African countries and Russia insist that the new UN envoy should be from the African continent.

Most of the representatives of council member states expressed their regret over the lack of agreement on renewing the mission's mandate for a full year and not just 3 months.
