The United Nations envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salame, stated on Tuesday that the political agreement will remain in force until a constitution and general elections are held in the country, adding that “this does not mean that its duration is unlimited.”

Salame said in his speech at the Libyan National Gathering in Abu Salim that “Libyans need help to reach a referendum on the constitution immediately after the enactment of the referendum law,” pointing out that his mission is working on all types of elections, whether municipal, parliamentary or presidential.

He explained that the presidential elections need a constitutional reference, adding that “Libyan state institutions need new elections which revive its legitimacy.”

He confirmed that the UN mission is also working to preserve the country's wealth, both domestically and abroad, and is following the management of Libyan assets and is helping to strengthen border protection.
