The Ministry of Transport has refuted claims of UN envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame that Mitiga Airport is being used for military purposes.

In a statement on Tuesday, the ministry confirmed that Mitiga Airport is only used for civil aviation and it’s the most used airport by Libyans to travel abroad.

“The repeated attacks on the airport put the safety of travellers and workers at risk and cause considerable financial losses for the aviation sector,” read the statement.

In his briefing at the UN Security Council on Monday, Ghassan Salame called on Tripoli authorities to stop using Mitiga Airport for military purposes and on Khalifa Haftar's forces to stop air-raiding it.
