The humanitarian organization Mediterranean Hope has reported that seven migrants died in the Mediterranean off the Italian island of Lampedusa, after trying to cross the Mediterranean to Europe on board a boat containing 280 migrants from Bangladesh, Egypt, Mali and Sudan.

The mayor of the island of Lampedusa, Salvatore Martello told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that three people died during the crossing, while four others who were suffering from severe hypothermia died while being transported to the island, after they were intercepted by the Italian coast guard.
