The British lawyer Karim Khan who had controversially acted as defense counsel for Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi has been elected as the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to succeed the current Prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda.

Karim Khan will assume the presidency of the court for a period of nine years, starting on the 16th of next June, after winning Friday in a secret ballot among three other candidates.

The British figure had taken over the defense of Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi and former Gaddafi prime minister Al-Baghdadi Al-Mahmoudi, besides acting as a principal defense advisor in other cases relating to Kenya, Sudan, and Libya.
