The Russian Foreign Ministry has considered that the continuation of the work of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, without a president agreed upon by the members of the Security Council, weakens the mediation capabilities and the authority and effectiveness of UN efforts.

In a statement, the Ministry confirmed its continuous efforts to reach acceptable solutions to the remaining issues for the leadership of the UNSMIL, in order to ensure its work in accordance with the mandate stipulated in the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

The Ministry expected the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, to nominate a suitable candidate to head the mission as soon as possible, stressing the role of the UN in pushing for a comprehensive peaceful solution to the crisis in Libya.
