The European Union extended the mission in Libya named Sofia on Tuesday. The mission is involved in combating illegal immigration in the Mediterranean and the extension is to last until 31 December 2018.

The EU was quoted as saying through the Italian agency AKI that they will modify the mandate of work crews on the Sofia mission so as to include a new establishment of monitoring the trainees to ensure efficiency within the Libyan Coast Guard in the Long-term.

The EU also said that the amendment will also include new surveillance and information gathering on human traffickers and oil smugglers in Libya, adding that the Sofia mission has been entrusted with the task of enhancing information exchanging with other rescue agencies of EU member states, Frontex and Europol in all matters relating to human trafficking.
