The US ambassador and Special Envoy to Libya, Richard Norland said on Friday, that the future stability of Libya depends largely on the holding of the general elections as scheduled in December.

Norland confirmed, according to a tweet on the official US embassy’s Twitter account, in response to armed clashes in Tripoli on Friday, that Libyans no longer wish to witness a civil conflict of the past again, reiterating that the best hope for peace and stability lies at the feet of the elections scheduled for December.

He went on to say: “Political leaders from all parties must bear the responsibility of reaching a compromise which will allow the intended elections to be held on time,” noting that the US would support this peaceful process.
